Product Description
Illus. in color. “An alphabet book with zany drawings and nonsensical verse provides an entertaining way for small children to learn the letters and their sounds.”–Booklist.

While the illustrations are cute, Dr. Suess’s ABC’s did not hold my 4-year-old’s attention. I was disappointed that the book didn’t use simpler language, so beginning readers could try sounding out some words on their own.

This is a memorable alphabet book, populated with real and imaginary animals, and written in Dr. Seuss’s witty, rhythmic, rhyming style. Each letter comes with its own short vignette, allowing for a regular sense of accomplishment for beginning readers, who will also appreciate the clever alliteration for each letter, as in “”Many mumbling mice are making midnight music in the moonlight… mighty nice.” It’s certainly not great literature, but so fun to read that it can almost make the reader forget he is learning a new skill.

I got this book because I had tried to teach my daughter the alphabet with games and incentives but she always seemed to lose interest, which made it feel like a chore for both of us. I then researched alphabet books and came across this one. I thought: if anyone could get her interested, it would HAVE to be Dr Seuss, and it did! She loves this book, specially, the silliness in it. That has been what keeps her interested in it. She even insists on being the one that says which letter I am reading about. Would definitely recommend to other parents who are looking for a fun way to teach their kids the alphabet.

I loved this book as a child and got it for my kids. They like to help read along.

Most well known for his delightful children’s stories full of witty wordplay covering allegorical nuggets of social commentary and teachable moments, Dr. Suess (aka Theodor Geisel) also wrote this excellent abecedarian to use in helping younger children learn to read, spell, and write. The book introduces each minuscule (lowercase) and capital (upper case) letter in the English alphabet, e.g. “Big A, Little a” and “Big B, Little b” and so on and so forth. The letter introduction is followed by a rhyming phrase full of letters beginning with the letter just introduced, except for “X” which has a phrase with a list of words that end in the letter. Like all of Dr. Suess’s books DR. SEUSS’S ABC is also illustrated with images portraying what was just said on the page before. True to the Doctor’s usual style, there are a few tricky names in the book. Children having the book read to them will probably love that, but beginner readers may find a few of those names a little frustrating. Overall a great ABC book recommended not only for fans of Dr. Seuss, but for any children who are beginning to read. It also makes a very good bedtime book.
